What is and what's inside a composite
wood baseball bat? You will find some of the following materials
(carbon, fiberglass and Kevlar fibers embedded in a plastic
resin) which are lighter, stiffer and stronger making the bat
less likely to break.
They are somewhat new to the baseball
scene. The AAA Pro Baum bat being one of the oldest (MLB had
Baum make a bat for Rookie and Low A to teach players to lay off
the the high and in pitch in 1992) Demarini, Baden, Combat,
Haag, Brett, and MacDougal (the maker of the PowerWood an all
wood radial
laminated
bat) have followed since.
To start off
some of the composite bats have a short break-in period and the
first 50 or so swings (using real Leather Baseballs) should do
it. These bats are used by High School, College and Adult
leagues for safety and to cut down on the expense of broken all
wood bats.
Yes, they
are expensive, and cost up to $220, but if broken in and used
correctly, you will get more out of these bats than the aluminum
or hybrids of past years. With the onset of the BBCOR.50 bat
rules Composite wood bats have to be tested and approved for use
in High School and College. Most Manufactures offer a minimum 90
day warranty, some as long as 4 and even 6 months (rumor has it
that a new Demarini Composite wood bat will have a year warranty
against breakage).
A standard
wooden baseball bat is made from one piece and type of
continuous wood. An all wood bat will eventually break if you
use it long enough, and regular wooden bats can break at any
time. They are especially vulnerable to balls hit off the handle
or off the end of the barrel. Composite bats address those
vulnerabilities and make a good hitter better.
Composite wooden bats are made
differently, using multiple wood types in layers that are glued
together and include more inner support than if they were made
from a single piece off wood. They are similar to other
engineered wood products in that materials are combined to make
the bats stronger. Some bats even use the same wood product
throughout but are engineered and crafted to provide more
support with a resin sheath around the bat.. Wood used in
composite bats includes ash, maple, bamboo, hickory and birch.
There are
several Pros and Cons (and misconceptions) about the composite
wood baseball bat, but players and coaches need to have the
right information before making a judgment.
The ball will sound like it came off
a wooden bat, which is a complaint in many reviews, but that's
why no one likes to hear a ping of the metal ones. The plus is
the safety feature of not shattering like all wood bats or hit
back at players with out enough reaction time to defend
themselves. Composite bats give a whole lot more forgiveness for
the imperfect swing, and have the potential to make the average
hitter somewhat better.
